Buying a new electric shaver is not easy. There is so much to choose from, many of the appliances are made by the world’s most respected tech and grooming brands. Why not read up on the research compiled by our team, who checked out the latest personal grooming appliances for men to bring you this buyers guide to the best electric shavers.
Although beard styles are as subject to fashion trends as any aspect of a man’s image, there is no doubt that there will always be a demand for the best electric shavers. The indispensable devices are a crucial part of the best grooming products that help a man to keep a beard either at bay completely or stylishly shaped.
It can be tough to find the best electric shavers, as there are many options available, and some of them from the most reputed tech or men’s grooming brands in the world. That is why our team has checked out some of the latest personal grooming appliances for men to bring you this buyers guide to the best electric shavers.
Before you delve into the nitty gritty of our team’s individual product reviews, here is a taster in the form of a video presentation that’s based on our pick of the best electric shavers of 2018.
We have looked at these appliances from a number of perspectives—for example, How close is the shave? How comfortable is the shave? What is the battery life?—so that you will be able to make an informed choice about the best electric shaver and which will suit your skin and facial hair type best, and deliver the best value for money.
To make this even simpler, and give you advice at a glance of what the key considerations should be when you’re considering an electric shaver, we would consider that the following five areas should be the key criteria. They are certainly the criteria that we used to determine which products on the market would make the cut of the best electric shavers of 2018.
For many people this will be the key consideration when looking at the best electric shavers. Key questions to be asked include: How effective are the blades? How close is the shave? How good is battery life? How fast is charging time? Is there a charging dock?
This will be a key criteria for people who have sensitive skin. Many of the newest and best electric shavers come with Wet & Dry technology, which enables the shaver to be used either on dry skin or on wet skin in the shower with foam or gel. Other measures to make things more comfortable include hypoallergenic blades or foils, as well as purpose-built systems like Braun’s CoolTec.
Ease of Cleaning
Most people who use an electric shaver do so because they want something that is going to streamline their morning shaving routine, and not add a labyrinthine cleaning process to it. Thankfully, most electric shavers can be rinsed clean under running water, and they’re supplied with special brushes to help you remove stubble from your appliance. This will help your shaver to last for longer. Other, more premium level shavers come with special cleaning/charging docks that carry out this process automatically. For many people though, this is a luxury. However, it is a mighty fine one if it’s within your budget!
Under this criteria, we consider things like the materials used in the product’s construction and the robustness of its build.
Value for Money
On balance, how well does this product function across the board? Does it tick all the boxes? If so, it’s likely that the price tag is justified on balance.
Best Electric Shavers 2018
Applying these five criteria to the best selling electric shavers on the market during 2018, we arrived at the following top 10 products.
Braun has been an electric shaver kingpin for many years, and when you look at the Series 7 790cc, it’s not difficult to see why. This Series happens to the company’s most popular range, and this model, the 790cc, has been outselling both Braun products and the competition since 2010.
It is reportedly the most popular electric shaver not just from the German tech giant, but of all time! This is a completely solid and reliable unit that provides an incredibly close shave.
There are three trimmers, each with different settings, so it really does a great job no matter what your preference is. This model loses points only for not featuring latest advances such as Wet & Dry technology, but there is no school like the old school, and that’s why the 790CC remains the king of the best electric shavers.

Braun Series 7 790CC – Shaving Performance
The comfort and shaving performance of this shaver are intextricably linked. Thanks to its three trimmers (two OptiFoil and one ActiveLift), this shaver provides an incredibly close and smooth shave, even compared with other shavers in the Braun stable.
In addition there are three different modes available—normal, intensive and extra sensitive, so you can adjust this shaver to suit your skin as well as your hair type. There is also a fantastic pop-up trimmer for trimming beards, moustaches and sideburns.
Braun Series 7 790CC – Comfort
This is one of the most comfortable shaves on the market, thanks its flexible head that can quickly move around and across the contours of your face. The shaver’s technology is designed to help trim more hair with fewer manual movements of the shaver. The Braun Series 7 790CC has OptiFoil trimmers, which will help the shaver to cover more facial hairs with less effort. ActiveLift tech, meanwhile, deals with shorter and in-grown hairs, and, Pulsonic technology creates about 10,000 micro vibrations every minute.
Although this is probably our favourite product of all that we reviewed for this post, we are astounded that a shaver of its all-round excellence is bereft of the Wet&Dry technology that enables you to use it either as a dry shaver, or, for people with sensitive skin, with shaving gel and water.
Braun Series 7 790CC – Ease of Cleaning
The Braun Series 7 790CC is one of the easiest shavers to keep clean, thanks to the alcohol-based Cleaning & Charging Dock that it’s supplied with. This can kill up to 99% of germs that build up on a shaver, with the push of a single button.
Braun Series 7 790CC – Durability
With three trimmers, a pivoting head and different personalization modes, you would imagine that it would be tough to contain these within a unit that will last. Braun has managed this feat thanks to the sheer quality of construction that has gone into the Braun Series 7 790CC.
Braun Series 7 790CC – Value for Money
It would be very difficult to imagine a better value for money proposition than the Braun Series 7 790CC. Not only does it have all the features outline above, but it delivers these at a price point that is a lot lower than many of the other shavers featured in this review post.
Turning to the Series 9 9095CC from Braun, this too delivers a great shave, and there is an additional trimmer, ‘Direct & Cut’. There are no fewer than 40,000 cross cutting actions in this, the latest electric shaver from the firm, and it also comes with Wet & Dry tech. These are the big bonuses over the 790cc.
However, the all-plastic build quality is disappointing and not up to the standard of the Series 7, and the price is significantly higher than the 790CC. In the end, your choice of this appliance all depends on how desperate you are for a Braun brand shaver that has the latest advances in shaving technology.

Braun Series 9 9095CC – Comfort
Despite being made out of plastic rather than the metal head of its sister product the Series 7 790CC, this product is actually a little more comfortable on the skin. And for people with especially sensitive skin It has Wet&Dry technology, meaning you can use it either on dry skin or with shaving gel.
Braun Series 9 9095CC – Shaving Performance
Like the Series 7, this is a foil-based shaver, and actually has an extra Direct & Cut trimmer that helps the shaver to align hair growing in differing directions before cutting them. And the 790CC’s ActiveLife trimmer has been replaced with HyperLift, a more advanced means of dealing with flat hairs.
Although it is a plastic build, this is one of the most handsome looking shavers on our list, thanks to its shiny chrome plastic covering. There is also a pop-up trimmer to help you deal with the shaping of beards, moustaches and sideburns.
Braun Series 9 9095CC – Ease of Cleaning
Again, the Braun Series 9 9095CC is a very easy appliance to clean, thanks to the Cleaning & Charging Station that it is supplied with.
Braun Series 9 9095CC – Durability
The plastic build of this shaver will mean that it’s less durable than some of the other products in the Braun and other electric shaver ranges, but treated right and cleaned regularly, there is no reason why this shouldn’t be your shaver of choice for many years to come.
Braun Series 9 9095CC – Value for Money
Although the plastic build is definitely inferior to that of the Series 7 790CC, the extra features, especially the Wet&Dry technology, means that the Braun Series 9 9095CC offers serious return for investment. While few products with this price tag could be termed ‘a bargain’, you definitely get what you pay for with Braun.
Moving on to the Panasonic Arc 5, we have to say at the outset that there is probably no shaver on our list that comes closer to the wet razor in terms of providing a close shave. It really is as good as the traditional wet razor! Its pivoting head, completed with five trimmers, is good for beards of all lengths and thicknesses, and the unit also comes with Wet & Dry technology. All of this close shave action comes at a cost, however: it is not as comfortable to use as others on the list, and it is definitely not for people with sensitive facial skin.

Panasonic ES-LV95-S Arc 5 – Shaving Performance
This is one of the best electric shavers in the history of Panasonic’s long line of great electric shaving products. Yes, they’re a little on the pricey side, but their performance makes them well worth the investment. This is an electric shaver that sets out to disprove the age-old wisdom that electric shavers cannot compete with a traditional manual wet razor shave for closeness. This shaver is incredibly fast, and delivers a shave that is exceptionally smooth.
If there is one notable irritation about this unit that impinges on it somewhat, it’s the operational noise, which seems extraordinarily loud for such a small unit! However, this is by way of searching for counterbalancing points to our otherwise overwhelming positive reception for this shaver.
Panasonic ES-LV95-S Arc 5 – Comfort
If you have sensitive skin, be aware that it is probably going to take you a few shaves to get accustomed to the Panasonic ES-LV95-S Arc 5. But having considered consumer research undertaken among those who encountered this problem in the beginning, it would seem that this is a matter of acclimatisation, and does not last for a long time.
Panasonic ES-LV95-S Arc 5 – Ease of Cleaning
There is a fantastic cleaning station supplied with the Panasonic ES-LV95-S Arc 5. It removes all of the hair and bristles from your shaver, and cleans the blades, at the single push of a button. And if you have to take the shaver with you from time to team, there is also a protective cover provided, in additional to a leather travelling pouch.
Panasonic ES-LV95-S Arc 5 – Durability
This is a robustly designed and built electric shaver, and it is packaged in such a way as to ensure it will last for a long time if given the proper care, cleaning and attention.
Panasonic ES-LV95-S Arc 5 – Value for Money
Another good value for money electric shaver, the Panasonic ES-LV95-S Arc 5 is a little bit more expensive than most of the other shavers on this post, but on balance, it’s worth the investment. For extra convenience, it even has an integral screen, displaying a representation of remaining battery life, as well as information on total shaving time.
The Philips Norelco SensoTouch 3D is probably one of the best rotary shavers on the market, and, with its precision performance, hugging the contours and shape of your face as it does its work, it works just as well on the GyroFlex 3D head as it does on the beard. Other great features included Super Lift&Cut, similar to Braun’s ActiveLift technology, which deals efficiently with the hairs along the jawline and on the awkward to reach parts of the neck. On the downside, the all-plastic and rubber build won’t be to everyone’s taste, and the battery cannot be replaced. In addition, the device can only be charged with its supplied dock, which will create issues if you want to take it with you on your travels.

Philips Norelco SensoTouch 3D – Shaving Performance
Philips has been a dominant brand in the rotary shavers market for many years now, and some experts even claim that the manufacturer is completely unrivalled for the quality of its technology. Certainly, the Philips Norelco SensoTouch 3D is a champion electric shaver, both for the face and for the head. Its pivoting GyroFlex 3D head is designed to give access to all the hair and stubbles it encounters, and its foils can spin, tilt and move multi-directionally. It also has Wet&Dry technology.
Super Lift&Cut, Philips’ version of Braun’s ActiveLift and Panasonic’s Lift-Tech, is designed to shave all the hairs on the neck and the jawline, as well as getting much closer to in-growing hairs, stubble and flattened hairs and bristles. Fast and powerful, and very, very close, there is not very much negative that can be said about the performance of this shaver at all.
Philips Norelco SensoTouch 3D – Comfort
The operation and movement of the GyroFlex makes it one of the most comfortable rotary shavers on the market. It truly hugs the skin, whether on your face or your head, moving smoothly across all the contours for an extremely close shave.
Philips Norelco SensoTouch 3D – Ease of Cleaning
The razor heads can be quickly cleaned by rinsing with hot water, and left to drip dry. You can also clean the shaving unit and its hair chamber using the brush that’s supplied with the razor. A bit more awkward than some of the other shavers on this list, but still effective.
Philips Norelco SensoTouch 3D – Durability
There is a bit of an issue with the build quality of this shaver, which is plastic and rubber, and while there are replacement parts available, they are very much on the expensive side.
Philips Norelco SensoTouch 3D – Value for Money
The build quality might be an issue for some, as will the fact that the shaver’s battery is fixed and can’t be replaced. However, if you go the extra mile in caring for this product, you may be able to overcome these difficulties and chalk them up as the price you have to pay for one of the closest shaves it’s possible to get with an electric shaver.
Next on our roundup of the best electric shavers is the Panasonic Arc 4, which is the budget version of the Arc 5. This differs from the Arc 5 in that there is one fewer trimmer on its head, and there is no cleaning and charging dock supplied. If you can live without that, however, you’ll be delighted with the extremely close shave from the unit’s four-blade technology. These blades can pivot at up to 30 degrees in any direction, and powered by a 14,000 CPM dual action motor, it can handle any thickness of beard.

Panasonic Arc 4 – Shaving Performance
This is almost exactly the same shaver as the Panasonic Arc 5, only with four blades instead of five in the head, and minus the charging dock that is such a strong selling point of the Arc 5. If you overlook those factors, though, what, to all practical purposes, does this mean for shaving performance.
Well, it will give you possibly as close a shave as the Arc 5, but definitely not with a comparable degree of comfort to the more premium product. If you are not plagued by sensitive skin, however, this would be one to consider. The four blades are incredibly sharp and durable, and they pivot at 30 degrees in any direction, and they’re powered by a 14,000 CPM dual action motor.
Panasonic Arc 4 – Comfort
As noted, if you have particularly sensitive skin, this might be one to avoid, or else consider the more premium Panasonic Arc 5.
Panasonic Arc 4 – Ease of Cleaning
Although the lack of cleaning and charging dock now makes this shaver incredibly affordable the trade off is going to be the extra effort you will have to expend in taking care of it. Yes, it’s a durable, well made shaver. But it will only last if you look after it and clean it regularly.
Panasonic Arc 4 – Durability
Like the Arc 5, this is a well designed, robustly built electric shaver. Provided you care for it properly and clean it regularly, there’s no reason why this should not be part of your daily routine for years to come.
Panasonic Arc 4 – Value for Money
Given that this is a Panasonic product, the only thing that people might quibble with regarding value for money here is the lack of a cleaning and charging dock. But that is how Panasonic manage to provide a premium standard shaving appliance at an affordable price tag.
The Wahl Professional 8061 has a classic retro look and is actually a favourite of professional barbers. It’s a powerful and solid unit, and its Dynaflex system can handles any of the more award areas such as the jawline. It has hypoallergenic foils that enhance the comfort of the experience. The only downside is that this is a finishing shaver only, and so is only good for dealing with stubble as opposed to full-grown beards. The shaver runs a little high and vibrates markedly during use. There is no Wet & Dry tech either. However, if you are after something no-frills that will be extremely effective for daily use, this could be the best electric shaver for you.

Wahl Professional 8061 – Shaving Performance
You’ll probably recognise this electric shaver from your barbers. This American brand is a popular choice among professional hair stylists, and the Wahl Professional 8061 is a particularly good model. The shaver’s Dynaflex Cutting system serves a number of purposes.
It can reach and hug the hard to reach areas of the neck and jawline, and the foils have sufficient flexility to prevent grazes and burns, while providing a very close and smooth shave. The foils also provide antimicrobial protection. It’s incredibly easy to use and has a pop-up trimmer for trimming and sculpting of beards, moustaches and sideburns.
Wahl Professional 8061 – Comfort
This will only be comfortable in two circumstances. Firstly, if you are going to use it has finishing shaver on a daily basis. It will be no good for dealing efficiently with hair that’s longer than short stubble length. Also, if you have sensitive skin, this one is probably best avoided, as it vibrates a lot in use, making it very uncomfortable and irritable on sensitive skin. The hypoallergenic foil heads are useful, but you would definitely be advised to road test it in some way first before committing to purchase. Otherwise, its level of comfort and convenience is superior.
Wahl Professional 8061 – Ease of Cleaning
After every shave, the blades should be sprayed with Wahl Blade Coolant and then have hair brushed out with a cleaning brush. The blades should also be lubricated with Wahl Oil. Deep cleaning requires the unit to be disassembled from time to time. Although the cleaning process is a little more demanding, the quality of the appliance demands it.
Wahl Professional 8061 – Durability
This is exceptionally easy to use with few moving parts, and its robust build should make it an essential tool in your daily or regular grooming regime for many years.
Wahl Professional 8061 – Value for Money
This will deliver smooth, close finishes, without leaving (for most people) any rashes or bumps and burns, and is easy to use. It does exactly what is asked of it, with a minimum of frills and fuss. However, the lack of Wet&Dry tech is a bit of a disappointment. That having been said, there should be few real quibbles for a device at this price point.
Philips with their Norelco AT830 electric shaver are another mainstay at the top end of the best electric shavers sector. Available since 2012, this wet & dry shaver is simple, with its lightly pivoting head, and can handle longer hair just as well as short stubble. Amazingly affordable for what it can do, the Norelco AT830 has a long-lasting battery and comes with a pop-up trimmer. In addition, it’s also very quiet to operate. For an electric shaver starter, you really can’t go wrong!

Philips Norelco AT830 – Shaving Performance
First released back in 2012, this venerable performer might still be to your liking if you incline less to foils and more towards rotary blade shavers. And this one has Wet&Dry technology too, so rotary fans will get the best of both worlds. While the head will not pivot in three dimensions like the SensoTouch, there is still sufficient ‘give’ to make it pretty effective for a comfortable and close shaving experience, on long hair or short, bristly stubble. There’s a pop-up trimmer, and for great convenience the battery life is particularly good, taking just 60 minutes for a full charge that will easily deliver up to 10 shaves.
Philips Norelco AT830 – Comfort
As noted, rotary shavers were developed with comfort in mind, and the Wet&Dry technology in this unit only serves to enhance the comfort.
Philips Norelco AT830 – Ease of Cleaning
This is very easy to clean, by rinsing under hot water. It will be easy to keep this product as clean as is required by using the the supplied kit of cleaning brushes and the easy-to-follow instructions in the manual.
Philips Norelco AT830 – Durability
The Philips Norelco AT830 uses a tried and tested shaving system that has endured, and provided it’s cared for according to the manufacturers instructions, there is no reason to assume that this shaver will not last you for many years to come.
Philips Norelco AT830 – Value for Money
Easy to clean, well designed, easy and comfortable to use with a great battery life and very durable, high quality build, the Philips Norelco AT830 is an absolute steal at its price point.
The Braun CoolTec has TEC (Thermo Electric Cooling) technology, and also has Wet & Dry tech that enables you to use it anywhere, whether on dry or wet skin, or in the shower. It can also be very easily cleaned. With a ‘look’ that matches its funky name, there are few better looking electric shavers out there, and because of that TEC tech, this is one of the best electric shavers for people with sensitive skin. Battery life is a little bit short, but if you can live with that and want a close and comfortable shave, this is well worth checking out.

Braun CoolTec – Shaving Performance
Another entry from the world’s leading foil shaver brand, the Braun CoolTec has a real edge thanks to its Thermo Electro Cooling technology, which cools the skin while you shave—a big bonus for an electric shaver. The CoolTec’s cutting system has three-stages, incorporating elements that move independently over the various facial contour, while Braun’s SensoBlade tech ensures smoothness by capturing the hairs that grow in different directions.
This is a wet and dry shaver that can also be used in the shower or with shaving gel for extra convenience and comfort, and there is a pop up precision trimmer to help you trim that beard or moustache to a fine degree.
Battery life is average. Although recharge time is an incredibly fast 5 minutes, you will get just 15 minutes’ shaving time with the cooling function activated (and 45 minutes with no cooling function). The shaver is supplied with a neat charging cradle, as well as the manuals and a cleaning brush.
Braun CoolTec – Comfort
Wet & Dry technology is always a big bonus for anyone with sensitive skin, as they will be able to use the shaver in conjunction with gel or other skin softening products. But the big news with this shaver is that it helps you say goodbye to shaver rash, burns and other irritations thanks to the CoolTec system that cools your skin as you shave.
Braun CoolTec – Ease of Cleaning
As with almost any Braun cleaner on the market, the most convenient way to is to rinse the CoolTec under hot running water, and there is a tiny brush supplied to help you shift more stubborn hairs that may be stuck in the foils.
Braun CoolTec – Durability
The Braun CoolTec is another long-lasting winner for the Braun brand. It’s a very rugged and chunky build that feels comfortable in the hand while shaving.
Braun CoolTec – Value for Money
All told, this is a very good shaver that delivers plenty value for money. It’s rich in features and provides a smooth, clean shave. What more could you reasonably expect in the medium price range?
Remington’s F5-5800 embodies the kind of innovation that you’d expect from such a leading-edge brand, who were, let’s not forget, the pioneer of the cordless recharging system for electric shavers. This model has two foils and one trimmer in the head, which can pivot in upwardly and downwardly directions, and which closely but gently hugs the contours of your face for a shave that is quite smooth and comfortable. It’s a great shaver for people with sensitive skin, and can easily be rinsed under a tap to keep it clean. On the downside, its all plastic build gives it quite a cheap feel, and does not effectively insulate the noise of the shaver’s motor.

Remington F5-5800 – Shaving Performance
Remington is one of the most prominent global brands in shaving and grooming, and this is a great way to get onboard the Remington shaver train if you are on a tight budget. The F5-5800 is one of the very best budget shavers, and pivoting head (which has two foils and one trimmer) will hug the contours of your face to give you an incredibly good shave.
Remington F5-5800 – Comfort
This shaver gives you one of the most comfortable shaves imaginable. Even compared with the very best of the ‘best across the board’ appliances, there is absolutely no irritation with the F5-5800.
Remington F5-5800 – Ease of Cleaning
All that’s required is for you to remove the head of the shaver, and to rinse it under hot running water. The blades have to be replaced after three or four months’ average usage
Remington F5-5800 – Durability
Despite the shaving performance, we found this a little bit disappointing from a brand like Remington. The all plastic build feels cheap and a little bit flimsy. The motor is quite loud, probably as a consequence of the plastic build, and, as noted, blades have to be replaced pretty regularly.
Remington F5-5800 – Value for Money
Just about the only drawback to the Remington F5-5800 is its plastic build, which we’ve gone through in some detail above. If you can get past that, this will get you one of the best electric shavers on the market in terms of performance.
10. Best Electric Shavers Review – Panasonic Arc 3
The Arc 3, like the Arc 4, is another Panasonic winner. The great thing is that the cheap price is not at the expense of performance of the shaver. This is because there is no cleaning and charging dock. It’s great to have access to as high quality a performer as this at a budget price. Its pivoting three-blade head provides an ultra smooth shave, and there is Wet & Dry tech too. You’ll also be able to keep a close eye on battery life with the LED power indicator. Priced at under $70, it’s difficult to imagine a more perfect shaver than this, but the absence of the dock and cleaner will be an issue for some, as will the shaver’s relatively high noise levels in operation.
Amazon Customer Reviews: 4,762
Average Review Rating: 4.2 out of 5 Stars
Panasonic Arc 3 – Shaving Performance
Extraordinary is the only word that applies to the shave you get from the Panasonic Arc 3. Its pivoting head and three very sharp blades will keep things close and smooth, while the LED indicator keeps you notified about the precise level of battery life remaining. The appliance also has Wet & Dry technology, so you’ll be able to use it with gel or in the shower.
Panasonic Arc 3 – Comfort
The closeness of the shave might make the Arc 3 a little irritating on sensitive skin, but this is offset by the Wet & Dry technology, and, to an extend, the hypoallergenic blades.
Panasonic Arc 3 – Ease of Cleaning
Although the Arc 3 is an incredibly good value shaver, the value is achieved by not providing the cleaning and charging dock that comes with the more premium Panasonic Arc 5 >. The only impact this has on ‘ease’ of cleaning is the couple of minutes you need to spend rinsing and cleaning your shaver on a regular basies.
Panasonic Arc 3 – Durability
As befits the Panasonic brand, the Arc 3 is well designed and robustly built; and if you care for it an clean it as you should, it should last for many years to come.
Panasonic Arc 3 – Value for Money
As noted, there is no cleaning and charging doc with the Panasonic Arc 3, but that’s the price you pay for a quality shaver that’s also exceptionally good value for money. It would be difficulty to find a shaver at this price point that ticks so many boxes.
Best Electric Shavers – FAQ
To help you fill out the picture when you’re searching for the best electric shavers, we’ve complemented our product reviews with the following section of Frequently Asked Questions, with answers that will help you more swiftly find the appliance that works best for your needs. If you’re feeling a little clueless about which shaver to pick, have a look at our answers to FAQs, where we try to clear things up a little bit for you.
Why should I invest in an electric shaver?
We would recommend investing an electric shaver if you’re looking into sculpting any kind of facial hair, be it a beard, or just a moustache, or even just to push back side-burns. It may seem unnecessary to you, however we would wager that once you try a high quality electric shaver, you’ll see what all the fuss is about. The empowerment to shape and re-shape your beard is something that must not be under-valued.
Note: Not all electric shavers are created equal. Unfortunately, you’ll have to spend the extra dollars if you’re looking for a truly professional end-result. That being said, there are plenty of affordable options available on the market that are capable of providing adequate beard shaping.
Are electric shavers safe?
Absolutely, all electric shavers are tested extensively to ensure that they are completely safe for use. The blades don’t actually come very close to your skin, rather the way you are expected to use the shaver is to let it glide over your skin, and the hair will feed into the shaver, rather than the blades coming out from behind the guard. The only way you might feel pain with a shaver is when cleaning the blades, or if the shaver is being used on low-battery (hair can get caught and will be pulled out, which can feel like a pinch).
Are electric shavers expensive?
Yes and no. There are plenty of adequate electric shavers currently available on the market for as little as under $40. However, this is not a total steal, as there is a compromise, and unfortunately it is quality. For truly professional results, you will have to spend into the hundreds of dollars. Our advice? Draw up a quick budget of what you can actually afford, and stick to it. We’ve made sure in our list above that there is a product to suit all budget brackets.
How should I clean my electric shaver?
It is vital that you clean your shaver after use. Usually, all this involves is removing the head of your shaver, and simply washing it under the tap, using a brush (one is usually included with the shaver) to remove any wet or other deposits like dust, etc. Some of the higher end models include a cleaning stand, which can be very useful when using your shaver every day.
Do I really need a ‘waterproof’ shaver?
If you intend on using your electric shaver with shaving gel, we do recommend going with a waterproofed shaver. This makes the process of shaving much less irritating for the skin.
Note: Shaving gel can get caught in the shaver, causing clogs, which will demand a much more thorough cleaning.
Is battery life important for electric shavers?
Many electric shavers are suitable for about a week’s use on a single charge. We definitely do not recommend using your shaver on very thick patches of hair, as this is not the intended use, and can wear out the battery. It’s very important that you keep an eye on your shaver’s battery, as you do not want to run out half-way through your morning shave. Rechargeable batteries vary from product to product with regard to battery life, and charging time, so we recommend taking note of these factors. Some of the budget electric shavers on the market will run on batteries, however this can become an incredible nuisance if they need to be changed often, so we advise you to ensure that your shaver will not go through batteries at a very high rate.
What type of electric shaver do I need?
There are electric shavers on the market that come in all shapes and sizes, for example, foil shavers feature a precisely perforated foil covering over the top of the shaver. This allows hairs to enter through the holes and meet the blades where they are cut off. These shavers can actually offer quite a close cut, as they usually feature a straight edge which can make it a lot easier to get the blade into difficult areas.
Another type of electric shaver is the single blade, which basically moves the head of the shaver to cut hair. These shavers are excellent for precise maintenance of your facial hair, and are usually a lot smaller than other types of shavers. However, the downsides to these shavers are that they are not very effective at achieving a very close cut, and their open head means hair can get everywhere.
Finally, we have the rotary shaver, which has round blades. These shavers are great for reaching difficult areas due to their multi-angular design. Similar to the foil shaver, the rotary shaver features a closed head, which means far less mess.
