The print book vs e-book continues to run and run, but figures for the best Kindle books and best selling titles for other e-readers confirm that electronic reading is here to say. According to a 2017 report by AuthorEarnings.com, there are 487,298,000 sales of ebooks per year in the US, worth $3.177m.

This is followed by the UK (95,623,000, £327m); Canada (26,017,000, CAN$180m); Australia (22,463,000, AU$164m); and New Zealand (1,306,000, NZ$2.3M). and this by no means confirms the long predicted death of traditional printed books. Ebooks occupy only a share of the reading market (determined by some sources as being in the region of 40-50 percent).

The best-selling Kindle book on Amazon is also the first of New York Times bestselling author Goldberg’s series of novels based around the antics of thriller writer Ian Ludlow. With the central ‘man on the run, up against time’ narrative drive, ‘True Fiction’ draws on conspiracy theories, experiments by intelligence agencies and taps into terrorism paranoia. A tough book to put down.

What can be said about J.K. Rowling’s incredibly successful and iconic ‘Harry Potter’ series that hasn’t been said already? One of the most successful books of all time (it’s also at Number 3 in Amazon’s ‘Most Read’ chart), it’s easy to forget, amid all of the spin-off hoopla and merchandise, what a rivetingly good romp the Harry Potter series is, and this is one of the very best in the eight-book saga. This edition is illustrated by Mary GrandPré, and it’s a classic coming of age tale, with the orphaned child wizard Harry, living with his horrible ‘muggle’ (non-magic) relatives, is visited by the mysterious giant Rubeus Hagrid who visits Harry on his 11th birthday to tell him that he has a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
