2. Best Kindle Books – Daughters Of The Lake by Wendy Webb

Daughters Of The Lake is yet another inspiring thriller from Wendy Webb, who’s known as ‘Queen of the Northern Gothic’ for her tales of gothic suspense against backdrops of old mansions and other creepy settings where her modern heroines tangle with the ghosts and mysteries of the past.

This novel is the tale of Kate Granger, who has travelled to her parents’ home on Lake Superior to recover from her divorce. Kate discovers the body of a murdered woman with a dead infant wrapped in her gown, washed up on the shores.

The only character who knows the identity of the woman is Kate, who has seen her in her dreams! As Lake Superior gives up its secrets the reader is, like Kate, pulled into a decades-old love story that ended in tragedy.

But there is hope too—what gives this ghost story a particularly compelling drive is the sense of people from the past reaching out for help to right the wrongs and misdeeds that befell them and resulted in tragedy. Compelling stuff!

3. Best Kindle Books – The Einstein Prophecy by Robert Masello

4. Best Kindle Books – The Reckoning: A Novel by John Grisham

Grisham is one of the most prolific novelists of the modern era, but if there’s a common criticism of his work, it stems from the perception that he’s a creator of boilerplate thriller writer, most often with the legal profession as the background. Many critics have pointed out that The Reckoning: A Novel is the most compelling evidence yet of a formidable talent that few have given Grisham any credit for.

The Reckoning: A Novel is set in October 1946, in Clanton, Mississippi, and is based on the fallout of the day when Pete Banning, a decorated World War II hero and member of a prominent local family, strode into the Methodist church and shot dead his pastor and friend, Revd Dexter Bell. However, this is not just about the legal investigation—it’s a classic of the Southern Gothic genre, with the intrigue that stems from Banning’s refusal to say anything to the sheriff, his legal team, the judge and jury, and even his family, other than “I have nothing to say.”

The settings include not just the signature Grisham battleground of the courtroom where the fate of the hero is argued over, but also the expertly drawn Jim Crow-era Southern US States, the jungles of the Philippines during the Second World War, and an insane asylum that’s haunted by the skeletons in the closet of the Clanton community.

5. Best Kindle Books – The Lines We Leave Behind by Eliza Graham

In England in 1947, a young woman is locked in an asylum because she’s charged with a violent crime she has no memory of committing. The book is about her attempts to piece together her past.

She recalls the years during the war in Yugoslavia where, with her lover by her side, she risked everything at the head of a resistance movement against the Germans… but after that, everything is in a fog of confusion and she has absolutely no idea how she came to be trapped in her current predicament.

Eliza Graham gently but expertly hooks the reader into a confrontation with the future of the heroine. We must decide whether she is a hapless, manipulated dupe, or else a violent criminal. The novel also considers wider issues, including the rarely explored history of Britain’s involvement in Eastern Europe and Yugoslavia.

The Lines We Leave Behind blends elements of spy story, psychological thriller, and romance, into a compelling whole.

6. Best Kindle Books – I Bet You by Ilsa Madden-Mills

This is a swoon-fest of a novel, and unsurprisingly it’s one of the most popular titles by Madden-Mills. Ryker Voss bets heroine Penelope Graham that he will win her the heart of the man she is smitten with. He plans to stoke the jealousy of her crush, by kissing Penelope in full view of him.

But there’s a narrative twist. Why is Ryker being so nice to Penelope, who is so the opposite of Ryker as to be his mortal enemy?

What Penelope doesn’t realise, however, is that Ryker is keeping a secret, in the form of another bet that could destroy Penelope.

The summary makes this sound like utter froth, but it is a fantastic read; a page-turning adult romance that is intriguing, funny, romantic and a white-knuckle rollercoaster ride of banter between lovers and the titanic emotions that seethe beneath the surface!
