Some Gaming Tech Terminology Explained

Given the sheer number of acronyms that are dotted throughout the vocabulary spoken by gamers, we thought it would be useful to clarify what a few of these mean before you dive into our product reviews and buyers guide FAQs section.

RAM (Random Access Memory)

A common question newcomers to this market often have to ask is; What is RAM? Well, to put it simply, RAM is your computer’s memory. It determines how quickly your computer is able to perform. Simply put, more RAM equals better performance.

Overclocking is when you run your computer’s processor at a speed that is higher than the manufacturer intended. The result is significantly elevated performance, however this can be extremely dangerous without the right equipment, as it can cause some serious damage to your computer. By introducing more RAM to the equation, you effectively push your computer’s performance limitations a bit further.

DDR3 RAM was introduced in 2007, and stands for “double data rate type 3”. Older gaming rigs may still require this type of RAM, whereas the newer systems will use DDR4, which was designed in 2014. If you’re looking for extra RAM for a top-of-the-range gaming system in 2021, odds are you’re going to need DDR4 RAM. Further, it is worth noting that DDR3 RAM is not forwards or backwards compatible, so make sure you know which type of RAM you need for your computer before making a purchase.

Best RAM for Gaming – FAQs

If you’re planning on gaming to a high standard, you’re going to need a few boosts to your system’s RAM, especially if you plan on overclocking at any stage. With a wide array of colors and designs available, you are guaranteed to find a DIMM that is both attractive and effective. Check out our FAQs section below where we run through some of the most commonly asked questions about RAM.

How much RAM is recommended for gaming?

This will vary with the size of the game, although nowadays games tend to take up about 8GB of RAM, if not more. If there’s a particular game you have in mind we recommend checking out its individual requirements prior to purchase.

What is the difference between DDR3 and DDR4 RAM?

DDR3 stands for “Double Data Rate Type 3”. Designed in 2007, this type of RAM is the older of the two types we will be discussing today, the other being DDR4 RAM (released in 2014). All you need to know about the differences between these two types of RAM is that they are not compatible with each other’s motherboards, this beans do not tr

What is RGB RAM?

RGB RAM simply incorporates bright colorful lights, making it perfect for installation in rigs that feature clear cases. This will make your gaming rig stand right out, making you the envy of your community.

What exactly is a DIMM?

A DIMM of RAM stands for a “Dual In-line Memory Module. This is essentially a circuit board on the motherboard, with the more DIMMs available, the better the system’s performance. A commonly asked question is; which is better, having one large DIMM or several smaller DIMMs? The answer to this question depends on how many slots are available on your motherboard. However, remember that the more sticks of RAM you have installed, the better the performance, so you’re going to want the larger DIMMs of RAM, as you can still fit additional modules to the other slots.

Why do some DIMMs of RAM have different shapes?

Different DIMMs of RAM can be different sizes for various reasons, for example, some come with a heat spreader to keep your computer cool while overclocking. Additionally, DIMMs that feature LEDs will take up significantly more space as well.

How do I install my RAM?

RAM is incredibly easy to install, however before we proceed you must make sure that the RAM you have is the correct type, and that your system is powered off completely. Once you’ve done this, you may then remove the paneling from the side of your computer’s case, line up the DIMM’s teeth with the corresponding area on the motherboard, and push in until you hear a click, which means the RAM is in place.

Are there different sizes of RAM available?

There several different sizes of RAM available on the market today. Most computers designed for gaming purposes will start off 16 GB of system RAM, with some upper-market systems stretching all the way to 64 GB. There are DIMMs available in 2 GB, 4 GB, and 8 GB. However, for gaming purposes we recommend having a minimum of four 4 GB DIMMs, any less would not perform very well.

Dual-Channel Mode?

Dual-channel mode allows two different RAM sticks to work together to process data better.

Can RAM be overclocked?

RAM can be overclocked. You’ll need to check and make sure that your system’s DIMMs are the same. Then, reboot your bios menu and go to performance. Once there, you can disable the default settings and choose a preset overclocking option. Saving the information to your bios, we then recommend carrying out an immediate stress test to see if your machine can handle the speed you’ve set it to. Take caution not to overclock your system too much to the point of causing damage.

What exactly is DRAM and SRAM?

DRAM stands for dynamic random access memory, while SRAM stands for static random access memory. DRAM stores core information that your computer needs to carry out basic functions. SRAM holds smaller nuggets of information, and is often much faster than DRAM as it stores all of its information in a static location.

Do motherboards have a RAM limit?

Yes, motherboards have a maximum RAM capacity.

My system isn’t showing all of my RAM?

If you have more RAM than your system is able to accommodate, the extra RAM won’t be of any use as the computer will not recognise it.

Is it possible that I won’t be able to fit my RAM into my motherboard?

Yes, in fact this can be a real problem. Sometimes a motherboard just doesn’t have enough space for a DIMM of RAM, usually because the RAM is too large, and can create problems for the fan. That being said, don’t panic, as there are plenty of smaller DIMMs out there on the market, so you’ll always find one to suits your needs.
