SOPA Bill Suspended

SOPA Bill Suspended

Last Updated: January 24, 2012

Over the weekend the internet collectively sighed a breath of relief as it was announced that Lamar Smith, the chief sponsor of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) bill, would be pulling the bill “until there is a wider agreement on a solution”. So, who is to thank for this turn-around? A large portion of credit must go to Wikipedia, Google and Reddit, who all raised awareness of the bill’s possible consequences if it were to be passed, by some form of ‘blacking out’ their respective web pages. Smith also added that he didn’t plan to back down on the bill, but it can only be expected that he will not receive enough support from his fellow congress members.
