THE Pokémon Company has kicked down the doors of its gaming console corral and is currently devouring the smartphone and mobile device apps market for Android and IoS with its free download Pokémon Go. The Pokemon Go phenomenon is an amazing ‘tipping point’ twist in fortunes for the venerable franchise almost two decades on from its initial spike in the late 1990s.
At the heart of the Pokemon Go phenomenon, is a very simple concept. It is set in a fictional world where strange monsters (Pokémon) live, appearing as rats, dinosaurs, birds, eggs, trees, eggs and other objects. The player, or ‘trainer’, must tame and train these Pokémon to fight against one another, with the ultimate goal of collecting all the creatures.
The genius of Pokémon Go (not only the game but the entire Pokemon Go phenomenon) is to tap into gamers’ desire of for an experience that more blends video gaming with the real world. Pokémon Go uses your phone’s GPS, camera and clock to detect your location and make Pokémon appear on your screen, which the player must catch.
Its virality has been at least partly driven by an official promotional video that on the official Pokémon Go YouTube channel alone, has been viewed over 3m times.
As with all things viral, the Pokemon Go phenomenon has created commercial opportunities, with its developers revealing plans to facilitate ‘sponsored locations’ within the game; and sparked warnings about potential risks arising from irresponsible usage.
