There is so much literature about the dangers of stress and the importance of tackling it that even the subject of stress has become stressful. But how is it possible to keep an eye on your stress levels and manage them during a busy working day. Here are just six tips from industry leaders who know a thing or two about stress and its hazards…

At worst, stress is a killer; at best, it’s a professional millstone, sapping energy, distracting focus and applying the brakes to productivity. If you are your own boss, what are the best ways to deal with stress?

Sleep is always a good remedy. Media entrepreneur Arianna Huffington, who now is better known as a sleep advocate, and author of The Sleep Revolution, says: “Everything you do, you’ll do better with a good night’s sleep.”

Ms Huffington argues that modern civilisation is in a sleep deprivation crisis that must be tackled if people’s happiness and physical health is to improve.

There are also numerous fantastic apps to help you on the path to a better night’s sleep, surely one of the best ways of reducing strees. Whatever the time of day, or the life of life, there is never a bad time to reduce stress. Sleep is important but it’s not everything. Most important is the need to know yourself and take responsibility for the fact that stress is your physical and mental response to circumstances you have created.



1. Know Yourself

Pay attention to signals from your body—physical discomfort, dizziness, sweating, and, more seriously, dizziness and chest pains—and acknowledge that it’s time to accept responsibility and adjust your lifestyle.

You may need to make some time for simple deep breathing exercises or meditation for a short time every day. More urgently, you may need to visit a doctor.

Stress can also arising from deferring an uncomfortable business decision, or facing the music from a dissatisfied client.

In either case, know yourself, deal with it and feel the weight lift off your shoulders.



2. Get Fit, Physically

Some experts recommend 30 minutes’ physical activity three times weekly. If that’s not possible, perform at least some physical exercise at the same time every day or week. Eat healthily too and increase your intake of fruit and vegetables.

Also, get sleep. Here is Arianna Huffington again, in a brief but extremely enlightening TED Talk, in which she reveals how she fainted from exhaustion, and discovered that the way to a more productive life is getting enough sleep.

This is important, she says, in a world where “sleep deprivation has become a virility symbol” and “terrible decisions” are being made.



3. Get Fit, Mentally

Although the late Steve Jobs was known for his acerbic personality, he was a lifelong advocate for calming the restless mind.

Jobs said when you manage to slow down your mind through meditation “you see a tremendous expanse in the moment… so much more than you could see before”.

4. Maintain Perspective

Never lose sight of the things you can’t survive without. Richard Branson once said: “If I lost the whole Virgin empire tomorrow, then I’d just go and live somewhere like Bali. Now, if there was a problem with my family, health-wise… that’s a problem.”

Branson’s parents supported his decision to leave school and set up his first business, and so were crucial in making him the success he became.

Therefore ‘family’ is as important to Branson as business, possibly more so. Keep a sharp focus on the things that truly matter in your life.



5. Take a Vacation

Designer Stefan Sagmeister closes his studio every seven years for a year-long sabbatical.

This is extreme, but powerful. If we spend 25 years learning, 40 working, and 15 in retirement, Sagmeister’s idea is to take five of the retirement years and intersperse them within the working years, because “the work that comes out of these years flows back into the company and into society at large, rather than just benefiting a grandchild or two”.

So—go on vacation, relax and rejuvenate, and come back refreshed and stronger than ever.



6. Stop Micro-Managing

Micro-managers tend to involve themselves with work even that they have assigned to others, and focus on the detail of the trees, rather than the big picture of the forest.

Micro-management discourages independent decision-making, and ultimately dents the loyalty and commitment of team members… perhaps terminally. It’s unsustainable.

But even if you’re the world’s best leader, there are things that you simply must empower others to take responsibility for.
