This Change AGENTs Pay it Forward post celebrates a professional sporting organisation that also goes the distance to promote social responsibility through its support for a range of worthy causes locally and globally: the Chelsea Football Club Foundation.
Founded in 1905, Chelsea Football Club is one of the most successful football teams in the history of British football. With five top domestic league titles, seven FA Cup wins and a UEFA Champions League win to name a few, Chelsea FC is understandably celebrated for its on-field success.
This sporting prowess has fuelled the development of a huge range of fan merchandise, encompassing everything from official club kits to mugs mugs; from piggy banks to the official club tie; from beanie hats to toddler blankets.
But there is another side to Chelsea which, while perhaps not as well known, is certainly as significant as the front-line’s football prowess: and that’s the work done by the club’s charitable foundation. Formed in 2010, the Chelsea Foundation brings together under one umbrella the club’s Football in the Community and Education departments as well as other charitable initiatives including its environment and anti-discrimination projects.
Recognised as a world leader in footballing social responsibility, the Foundation aims to motivate, educate and inspire people through the power of sport, supporting communities and individuals in the UK and elsewhere. Here is a little more detail about how the Foundation’s activities.
Chelsea FC has established a large number of International Soccer Schools around the world, in countries such as Turkey, Malaysia, Indonesia, and China in addition to the UK. These schools enable kids from poverty-stricken areas to develop socially as well as athletically.
The Foundation’s Disability Inclusion programme allows people with any disability to participate in regularly organised football games and coaching sessions. People with disabilities are encouraged to improve their health, social skills and independence. Chelsea captain John Terry is a regular volunteer with the programme.
The Chelsea FC Foundation’s Education department promotes community team work, education and learning, in over 60 schools and colleges across Hammersmith and Fulham, Westminster, Kensington, Chelsea, Brent and Croydon.
Anti-Discrimination & Social Inclusion
Chelsea FC was awarded the advanced level of the Kick It Out Equality Standard for its work in helping to combat discrimination, prejudice and racism in football and life generally.
The club has undertaken numerous projects to engage fans and communities in its anti-discrimination campaign. Thousands of people in south-west London participate in the club’s annual anti-discrimination education campaign, which is is headed up by Chelsea star Paul Canoville.
Match Day Collections
Last season, almost 100 charities applied for a chance to hold collections at the club’s home venue, Stamford Bridge, on match days. The club’s supporters select the charities that fundraise at the ground on match days, and there are four categories for the various ‘bucket’ collections: Medical, Children’s, Armed Forces and local charities.
