Change AGENTs Pay it Forward: FC BarcelonaLast Updated: February 1, 2019
A globally iconic name in soccer, FC Barcelona is one of the most successful football clubs of all time, having produced a succession of the game’s greatest players and attained an enviable trawl of blue riband silverware over the years. But the under-the-radar work undertaken by the FC Barcelona Foundation is just as noteworthy.
FOUNDED in 1899, FC Barcelona is one of the most famous and successful football clubs of all time. The club has played its home games at the historic 99,354-capacity Camp Nou since 1957.
Barcelona’s famous La Masia academy has produced some of the greatest footballers in this history of soccer, including past legends such as Pep Guardiola, Jordi Cruyff and Carles Puyol, and, more recently, Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta and Gerard Pique.
The club has won the Spanish League on 24 occasions, making them the second most successful team after Real Madrid. Barcelona is the Spanish Cup’s most successful team, with 28 Copa Del Rey 28 titles. The club also boasts five European Cups, five European Super Cups, and three FIFA Club World Cup wins.
Here are the main programmes and initiatives that are organised and administered by the foundation that have made FC Barcelona such a crucial player off the pitch as well as on.
THE FutbolNet programme is an new and exciting method for educating young people through sport, focusing on subjects such as discrimination and gender. Through FutbolNet, young people build up mutual respect, and gain self-confidence and a sense of responsibility. The programme is hosted in several Catalonian cities, in collaboration with their respective local authorities, targeting young people aged 10-16 years. This programme is also practised in Rio de Janeiro, Rosario and other cities around the world.
Making Dreams Come True
MAKING Dreams Come True is a special Foundation programme for seriously ill children and young people, who might have a wish to meet a Barcelona player, or attending the Camp Nou to watch a match or a training session.
Always-willing players and coaches of FC Barcelona such as Lionel Messi and Javier Mascherano (pictured above) make sure these wishes are granted. This programme also organises ‘open door’ training sessions during the Christmas holidays, so the fans can come along and watch the Barça first team’s match preparations. The staff also pay visits to all the main hospitals in Barcelona.
OVER the years, Barcelona FC and the club’s foundation have forged important links with other charitable organisations, including Unicef, the children’s rights charity. The Unicef logo is featured on the club’s kits, and the charity receives an annual donation from the club in excess of €2.3m.
The Barcelona Foundation also has ties with many other great foundations, including, to name but a few, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, The Cruyff Foundation, the Eric Abidal Foundation and the Leo Messi Foundation.
