With the students and teachers separated by the students, and the students pretending to howl in pain with each electro-shock, Milgram wanted to determine how far people will go when obeying orders from an authority figure (“please continue the experiment, teacher”), even if their actions are causing pain to others. Some went all the way! Controversial and largely discredited at the time, Milgram has been vindicated with time, and the experiements—which inspired the major motion picture The Experimenter—are both instructive and horrifying.
