Startup Events: Renew the Book 2020Last Updated: May 1, 2020
Renew The Book is the aptly titled event for five lucky startups in the book publishing industry, who will benefit from a marathon 40 days of intensive industry expertise, networking and mentorship in Amsterdam from late February.
RENEW The Book is a startup event with a difference. Not only is it one of the newest startup events, and a competition for startups in the publishing industry: it’s also an entire, intensive business process that goes on for 40 days in the capital of the Netherlands, Amsterdam.
“Books have been under pressure, but if you use digital well… you will fight back.”
The title of this event—now in its second year—is entirely apt. That’s because the renewal of the book for the digital age is precisely the overall goal of the organisers.
As program director Jan Paul Grollé states: “It all comes down to making the book, in its traditional form, compete with all the digital media. Until now, books have been under pressure, but if you use digital well, then, actually, you will fight back and get more read again.”
Renew The Book is the world’s first book innovation startup accelerator, aimed at publishing entrepreneurs who are passionate about improving the ways people read, write and share literature and non-fiction books.
For 40 days, five publishing startup companies will be based in Amsterdam, learning from mentors and industry leaders as they focus on their product design, market fit and business model, as well as gaining access to publishers, retailers and other stakeholders in the book sector.
The intensity of the process means that only five companies are accommodated, but with the stakes so high—not only do participants have the benefit of the intensive 40-day program, but there is also €15,000 up for grabs for the winner of the process, and all for zero equity—means that startups and innovators in the book industry should be penciling in an application for next year’s event already.
